PROJECT BASED LEARNING-PBL

"The knowledge of the world can only be gained in the world, and not in a closet” ~ Lord Chesterfield

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a unique American model for classroom activity that shifts away from the classroom practices of short, isolated, teacher oriented lessons and instead, emphasizes learning activities that are long-term, interdisciplinary, student-oriented and integrated with real-world issues and practices. As part of every class, students are given team as well as individual projects that require them to practically implement their learning and reach out to corporates.
One immediate benefit of practicing PBL is the unique way that it can motivate students by engaging them in their own learning. PBL provides opportunities for students to pursue their own interests and questions and make decisions about how they will find answers and solve problems.

PBL also provides opportunities for interdisciplinary learning. Students apply and integrate the content of different subject areas at authentic moments in the production process, instead of in isolation or in an artificial setting. PBL helps make learning relevant and useful to students by establishing connections to life outside the classroom, addressing real world concerns, and developing real world skills. Many of the skills learned through PBL are those desired by today’s employer, including the ability to work well with others, make thoughtful decisions, take initiative and solve complex problems.

In the classroom, PBL provides many unique opportunities for teachers to build relationships with students. Teachers may fill the varied roles of coach, facilitator, and co-learners. Finished products, plans, drafts, and prototypes all make excellent ‘conversation pieces’ around which teachers and students can discuss the learning that is taking place.

Student work includes documentation of the learning process, which along with their final projects can be shared with other teachers, parents, mentors, and the business community who all have a stake in the students’ education.

"CAPSTONE" is a business simulation (part of the coursework in Strategy and Policy) where student teams run companies using computer-based simulation. Simulation provides a unique (and risk free) learning opportunity. The simulation has eight rounds and student teams (that are competing with each other) can see the impact of their decisions on the company’s position and profitability. The simulations help students to integrate functional areas like Marketing, Production, HR, and Finance. Student teams are expected to develop marketing plans, production plans, HR plans and finance plans, and coordinate those plans into a working whole.

The simulation also provides opportunity to do market place analysis viz. Situation Analysis, Competitor Analysis, SWOT Analysis and Performance Assessment.

Student teams are expected to develop a mission, vision, competitive advantage, and competencies for their companies. More than any thing, CAPSTONE helps students to put their plan into play against competitors thus giving a feel for execution.
